PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS
Shine has been conducting the awareness programs, rallies on HIV/ AIDS at various Educational institutions and impacted more than 3,000 youths throughout Karnataka since 2010.
Compared to other diseases HIV/AIDS is more concerned issue because of the stigma, discrimination, Psycho-social and economical impact associated with the syndrome. According to a UNAIDS 2018 report, there were 2.1 million people affected by AIDS in India in 2017. This makes India the third-largest HIV epidemic in the world.
As per the recently released report by NACO, India HIV Estimation in 2017, National adult (15-49 years), adult HIV prevalence is estimated at 0.25 %( 0.18-0.34) among males and at 0.19% (0.14-0.25) among Females.
Young people aged between 10 and 24 years represent 30% of India's total population. Over 35% of all reported AIDS cases in the country occur among those in the age group of 15-24 years indicating that young people are not only at high risk of contracting HIV infection but already constitute a significant percentage of people living with HIV/AIDS.
There are many factors that put young people at an elevated risk of HIV/AIDS. Adolescence and early adulthood is a critical period of development when significant physical and emotional changes occur. Adolescents and young people have growing personal autonomy and responsibility for their individual health. The transition from childhood to adulthood is also a time for exploring and navigating peer relationships, gender norms, sexuality and economic responsibility.
Activities for HIV/ AIDS prevention among Youth:
- Conducting awareness programs at Educational institutions about HIV/AIDS, STD's its causes and consequences, impact on society.
- Making people to understand about the myths and facts of HIV/AIDS.
- Educating about the preventive measures.
- Conducting rallies for community awareness through students' participation.
- Counselling the people (both male and female) to know their HIV status before entering the system of marriage.
- Painting HIV/AIDS slogans on walls for public awareness.
